Our lab is interested to understand how cell death and injury occur in the very early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therefore, we use a wide variety of methods, including multi-omics, genetic engineering, and microscopy to delineate how neurons and glia cells communicate and die in AD.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the mos common cause of dementia worldwide. Its prevalene is rising due to the aging society. Therefore, people with AD commonly have other diseases that decisively shape the disease course of AD. We are interested to delineate resilience and vulnerability to AD pathologies and neurodegeneration by systematically investigating co-pathologies like stroke, cardiovascular diseases, or infections in AD.
Our lab is coordinating a local neuropsychiatric biobank with blood, cerebrospinal fluid, brain biopsies and autopsy tissues. Biobanking is a central step to translate our findings from basic research to applications in people with Alzheimer's disease. To facilitate reproducibility, we are collaborating with large cohorts and biobanks worldwide.
We are an interdisciplinary, motivated and dynamic team that is driven by our fascination for molecular neuroscience and biotechnology and our goal to improve patient care. Team work, openness, transparency and diversity are our main priorities for a fruitful work and research environment. Our research group is part of the Neurology Department of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Hamburg, Germany. We have close local, national and international collaborations to find new biomarkers and treatments for Alzheimer's disease.
